Create a Dimension

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to create an Account, Organization and Product dimensions in your model.

Create Account Dimension

  1. In the main toolbar, select the Add new + icon then Add Dimension.

  1. In the Create Dimension window, enter and select the following:

    • Name: Admin_COA
    • Type: Account
    • Leave the Make Public checkbox unchecked

Then click Add to add the Dimension.

  1. Within the Dimension Settings panel on the right of the screen, in the Description field, enter Accounts and hit the return key.

  1. Hover over Admin_COA and then select the Edit Dimension Table button.

  1. In the Dimension Table settings panel, under Hierarchies, select the More (…) icon, then Edit.

  1. De-select Value is mandatory and then select OK.

  1. Select the Grid mode icon.

  1. Add the first account by entering the values shown here:

Note

We could continue to type in all of our dimension information manually, however to save time, these details can also be pasted in from an Excel file.
  1. If you have not already downloaded the Excel file SAC Workshop.xls right click on Files and select Open App in New Tab (but do not close your original browser tab).

  1. In the new tab that opens, under Files, navigate to the Datasets folder: My Files > Public > Experience Academy - SAC Planning > Datasets and then select the SAC Workshop.xls file.

  1. Then select the downloaded file SAC Workshop.xls to open it.

  1. In the Excel file:
    • Select the PnL_COA sheet.
    • Select cell A2 through N18 only (Accounts but not KPIs)
    • Use Ctrl+C to copy the selection

  1. Return to your original SAP Analytics Cloud browser tab that you still have open. Select the first cell of the first row (PL010) and paste the copied content (Ctrl+V).

  1. Select the back arrow to return to main model.

Create Organization Dimension

  1. In the main toolbar, select the Add new + icon then Add Dimension.

  1. In the Create Dimension window, enter and select the following:

    • Name: Admin_ORG
    • Type: Organization
    • Select the Make Public checkbox

Then click Add to add the Dimension.

  1. In the Dimension Settings panel on the right of the screen, in the Description field, enter Organization and hit the return key.

  1. Hover over Admin_ORG and then select the Edit Dimension Table button.

  1. In the Dimension Table settings panel, under Hierarchies, select + Create Hierarchy, then select Parent-Child Hierarchy.

  1. Enter the following in the Create Parent-Child Hierarchy window:

    • ID: H1
    • Description: H1

Then click Create.

  1. Return to the downloaded Excel Sheet from the earlier steps SAC Workshop.xls. Then do the following:

    • Select the PnL_ORG sheet.
    • Select all the cells A2 through E21
    • Use Ctrl+C to copy the selection

  1. Return to your original SAP Analytics Cloud browser tab that you still have open. Select the first cell of the first row (#) and paste the copied content (Ctrl+V).

  1. In the Person Responsible column, replace ADMIN with your user ID ().

  1. Select the back arrow to return to main model.

Create Products Dimension

  1. In the main toolbar, select the Add new + icon then Add Dimension.

  1. In the Create Dimension window, enter and select the following:

    • Name: Admin_PRD
    • Type: Generic
    • Leave the Make Public checkbox unchecked

Then click Add to add the Dimension.

  1. In the Dimension Settings panel on the right of the screen, in the Description field, enter Products and hit the return key.

  1. Hover over Admin_PRD and then select the Edit Dimension Table button.

  1. In the Dimension Table settings panel, under Hierarchies, select + Create Hierarchy, then select Parent-Child Hierarchy.

  1. Enter the following in the Create Parent-Child Hierarchy window:

    • ID: H1
    • Description: H1

Then click Create.

  1. In the Dimension Table settings panel, under the Properties section, select the + Create Property button.

  1. In the Create Property window, enter and select the following:

    • ID: Volume
    • Description: Volume
    • Type: Text

Then select Create.

  1. Return to the downloaded Excel Sheet from the earlier steps SAC Workshop.xls. Then do the following:

    • Select the PnL_PRD sheet.
    • Select all the cells A2 through D23
    • Use Ctrl+C to copy the selection

  1. Return to your original SAP Analytics Cloud browser tab that you still have open. Select the first cell of the first row (#) and paste the copied content (Ctrl+V).

  1. Select the back arrow to return to main model.

Set Final Model Preferences

We will now add a Measure to our model and set the final preferences.

  1. In the main toolbar, select the Add new + icon then Add Measure.

  1. In the Measure Settings panel on the right, under General, enter Measure_Admin in the Name field, and hit the return key.

  1. Under the Units & Currencies section, select the following:

    • Unit Type: Currency
    • Currency: From Dimension
    • Dimension Admin_ORG will be selected by default (if not, select it from the drop-down)

  1. Hover over Date and then select the Edit Dimension Table button.

  1. In the Measure Details panel, under the Date section, set the From/To Year values to 2018 and 2023.

  1. Select the Refresh button to get a preview of the data from the selected timeframe.

  1. Select the back arrow to return to the Model Structure screen.

  1. One more setting to adjust is the number of decimal places. In the Measure Settings panel, scroll to the Formatting section, then set the Decimal Places drop-down to 2.

  1. Select the Save icon to save the model.

  1. In the Save Model window, first ensure you are saving under My Files, then enter the following:
  • Name: PnL_Admin
  • Description: Profit and Loss Admin

Then select Save.

  1. In the Model View dropdown, select Graph.

  1. Your finished Model should look like this:

Create Account Dimension
