Create a Value Driver Tree

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to create a value driver tree.
  1. Select Main Menu > Stories and select the Responsive tile to create a new Responsive page.

  1. In the Assets panel, expand Others, then drag and drop the Value Driver Tree (VDT) widget onto the Story canvas.

  1. Open the Select a data source dropdown.

  1. Select your data model PnL_Admin.

  1. Resize the VDT Widget on the canvas by dragging from the corner.

  1. In the Builder panel, under the Filter section, select Date.

  1. Set the date range from year 2019 to 2023. Then select Set.

  1. Select Version (1) under Filter.

  1. Select Forecast, then select OK.

  1. In the centre of the VDT widget, select Auto-Create Value Driver Tree from Model…

  1. De-select All Accounts, select Net Income and then select OK.

  1. The VDT diagram will be displayed. Zoom out/in to get a better view of the nodes. You will see that some warnings are showing, telling you that a measure is needed. Select + Add Measure under Default Node Configuration.

  1. Select your default measure Measure_Admin.

  1. Select + Add Filter.

  1. Select Organization.

  1. Expand World > North America then select United States. Then click OK.

  1. Locate the Product Sales node to the right of the VDT.

  1. In the Product Sales node, select the first year that has no sales data added (here you can see it is 2021).

  1. Enter 1761000 via the calculator menu that appears and then select OK.

  1. You will see the value updated in yellow in both Product Sales and Total Sales.

  1. In the Builder panel, select the + Add Node button under the Node List section to add a new Node to the VDT.

  1. Rename the new Node to FPS Product Sales.

  1. Select + Add Account.

  1. Click Select Account.

  1. Search for Product Sales, select it and then click OK.

  1. Select + Add Filter.

  1. Select Products.

  1. Expand All Product Lines, select First Person Star then select OK.

  1. In the VDT you will see that the FPS Product Sales node has now been filtered by First Person Star.

  1. Under the Relationships section select + Add Parent.

  1. Select Product Sales.

  1. You will now see the FPS Product Sales node moves up in the diagram automatically and is now connected to the Product Sales node.

  1. Select anywhere on the open canvas area of the VDT Widget to bring focus back on it in the Builder.

  1. In the Builder panel, click the + under Node List to add another Node to the VDT.

  1. In the Builder, select the Node name field to change the name of the new Node to RG Product Sales.

  1. Select Add Account.

  1. Click Select Account…

  1. Search for Product Sales, select it and then select OK.

  1. Select + Add Filter.

  1. Select Products.

  1. Expand All Product Lines, select Role Game then select OK.

  1. In the VDT you will see that the RG Product Sales node has now been filtered by Role Game.

  1. Under the Relationships section select + Add Parent.

  1. Select Product Sales.

  1. You will see that both RG Product Sales and FPS Product Sales nodes are now connected to the Product Sales node.

  1. Select the open canvas area of the VDT Widget to bring focus back on it in the Builder.

  1. In the Builder panel, select the + under Node List to add another Node to the VDT.

  1. Change the name of the new Node to SP Product Sales.

  1. Select + Add Account.

  1. Click Select Account…

  1. Search for Product Sales, select it and then select OK.

  1. Select + Add Filter.

  1. Select Products.

  1. Expand All Product Lines, select Sports then select OK.

  1. Under the Relationships section select + Add Parent.

  1. Select Product Sales.

  1. You will see that all three of the nodes we added; FPS Product Sales, RG Product Sales and SP Product Sales are now connected to the Product Sales node.

  1. Select the open canvas area of the VDT Widget to bring focus back on it in the Builder.

  1. In the Builder panel, select the + button under Node List to add another Node to the VDT.

  1. Change the name of the new Node to ST Product Sales.

  1. Select + Add Account.

  1. Select Select Account…

  1. Search for Product Sales, select it and select OK.

  1. Select + Add Filter.

  1. Select Products.

  1. Expand All Product Lines, select Strategy then select OK.

  1. Under the Relationships section select + Add Parent.

  1. Select Product Sales.

  1. You will see that all four of the nodes we added; FPS Product Sales, RG Product Sales, SP Product Sales and ST Product Sales are now connected to the Product Sales node.

Note: You will also see that some contain data and some do not, this is due to the Product filter we have set for each.

  1. Now let’s save your progress. Select the Save icon > Save.

  1. In the Save Story dialog box, select My Files, then enter the name VDT Story , then select Save.

  1. You you will get a confirmation at the bottom of the screen that the story has saved successfully.

  1. Let’s view our finished Value Driver Tree. Select View in the top-right corner.

  1. Using the magnifier tool in the bottom corner, you can quickly move around the VDT.

  1. Click on the value for the latest year in the FPS Product Sales node, then adjust the slider to +5%. Then click OK.

  1. You will see the +5% change updated for each node that is connected in this branch of the VDT.

Well done! You have just created a full Value Driver Tree diagram from start to finish.

  1. You will see that both RG Product Sales and FPS Product Sales nodes are now connected to the Product Sales node.

  1. Select the open canvas area of the VDT Widget to bring focus back on it in the Builder.

  1. In the Builder panel, select the + under Node List to add another Node to the VDT.

  1. Change the name of the new Node to SP Product Sales.

  1. Select + Add Account.

  1. Click Select Account…

  1. Search for Product Sales, select it and then select OK.

  1. Select + Add Filter.

  1. Select Products.

  1. Expand All Product Lines, select Sports then select OK.

  1. Under the Relationships section select + Add Parent.

  1. Select Product Sales.

  1. You will see that all three of the nodes we added; FPS Product Sales, RG Product Sales and SP Product Sales are now connected to the Product Sales node.

  1. Select the open canvas area of the VDT Widget to bring focus back on it in the Builder.

  1. In the Builder panel, select the + button under Node List to add another Node to the VDT.

  1. Change the name of the new Node to ST Product Sales.

  1. Select + Add Account.

  1. Select Select Account…

  1. Search for Product Sales, select it and select OK.

  1. Select + Add Filter.

  1. Select Products.

  1. Expand All Product Lines, select Strategy then select OK.

  1. Select Product Sales.
