The Value of Plotting the Market Dynamics Chart

In this video, Alex explains the value of plotting the dynamics chart:

Plotting the Market Dynamics Chart

The Market Dynamics tool is an optional addition to your strategy and plan document, accessible via Manage Tools. This tool enables the category manager to analyze the market from the buyer's perspective using various methods, including Beroe (a market intelligence provider), generative AI, or manual data entry. The insights gained are presented in Porter's five forces framework, which focuses on market dynamics.

The five forces include:

  1. Competitive Rivalry: This force measures the intensity of competition within the marketplace. When there are many strong competitors, companies compete for customers through advertising campaigns and price reductions.
  2. Supplier Power: This force assesses the influence of suppliers and their control over prices. Fewer suppliers mean more power for them, which can potentially reduce profitability for businesses.
  3. Buyer Power: This force evaluates the power consumers have in the marketplace. Customers wield more power when there are fewer buyers compared to suppliers.
  4. Threat of New Entrants: This force gauges how easy or difficult it is for new competitors to enter the market. If entry barriers are low, established companies may face a higher threat from newcomers.
  5. Threat of Substitutes: This force measures how easily consumers can find alternatives for a product or service. It involves examining and comparing competitors, price points, and overall quality.

The category manager can input scores for each of these forces, ranging from 1 to 5 (whole numbers or to two decimal places). To get recommended scores from the SAP Category Management solution, the category manager should select a Beroe report and answer related questions for each force. Each "Yes" response contributes positively to the cumulative weight, while any optional questions left unanswered are disregarded.

All market dynamics documents created will be saved in the Toolkit, allowing you to select a previously created document if needed.

Additionally, if enabled by the category manager administrator, you can use generative AI to generate content recommendations within the Market Dynamics tool. Once this feature is activated, simply click the Generate button to utilize AI, similar to the Category Segment and Cost Structure cards.

Summary

In this lesson, we explore the optional Market Dynamics tool available within the SAP platform, designed to support category managers in analyzing the market from a buyer's perspective. This tool can be integrated into your strategy and plan document via the Manage Tools section.

The Market Dynamics tool incorporates insights through Porter's Five Forces framework, which includes:

  1. Competitive Rivalry: Understand the intensity of competition among firms. High competition can lead to aggressive marketing and lower pricing strategies.
  2. Supplier Power: Evaluate suppliers' control over pricing and their influence in the market. Few suppliers can mean more power and potentially affect profitability.
  3. Buyer Power: Assess the influence of consumers in the market. More consumer power arises when there are fewer buyers compared to suppliers.
  4. Threat of New Entrants: Analyze the barriers for new competitors entering the market. Low entry barriers can increase threats to established companies.
  5. Threat of Substitutes: Determine how easily consumers can replace a product or service with alternatives by comparing competitors, prices, and quality.

The category manager can input scores for each force, from 1 to 5, or use the SAP Category Management solution to receive recommended scores. This involves selecting a Beroe report and answering related questions, where each affirmative response influences the cumulative score.

Market dynamics documents you create are saved in the Toolkit for easy retrieval. Additionally, enabling the generative AI feature allows the generation of content recommendations, enhancing analysis with AI support.

This lesson provides an understanding of leveraging the Market Dynamics tool to assess market forces effectively, aiding in strategic decision-making.
