Account Input Control

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to create Account Input Controls for dynamic accounts in widgets.

Account Input Controls give you the ability to change which accounts to display in charts and tables.

Review the Help Portal for more information on Account Input Controls.

In this lesson add a dynamic Account Input Control to the Time Series Chart and Table widgets, to view financial data by Gross Margin or Sales Revenue.

After completing the lesson, your story (in edit mode) should look similar to:

Prerequisites

You already created a story, skip to

Please create a copy of MyStory - Select - Account Input Control in your private My Files folder.

  1. From the Navigation Bar click Files, and search for MyStory - Select - Account Input Control.

  1. Select the checkbox, and click the Copy To icon from the Files Toolbar.

Save a copy to your private folder.

  1. Click on My Files and name your story with your username _MyStory, update Description, then click OK.

Add Account Input Control

Add the option to view salary data not only by Department, but also Employment Type and Position.

Open your story in edit mode if not already.

  1. Locate _MyStory from the navigation bar at Files -> My Files, or Stories -> Recent Files.

  2. Select Edit.

  3. Open the Right Side Panel (Builder, Styling) from the View menu in the Top Toolbar, if not already open.

  1. Click on the Table widget.

  2. In the Builder tab under Columns, click on + Add Account for Account.

  1. Select + Add Account Input Control.

  1. Select Sales Revenue and Gross Margin, in the specific order.

  1. Click OK.

The account input control widget was added to the page.

  1. Drag and Drop the New Account Input Controls widget to the Filter lane.

Rename the new input control.

  1. Double click on the New Account Input Control and rename it to “Select Account”.

  1. Resize the Account Input Control to display all the Accounts.

Update Table

The static Gross Margin account is still in the table, let’s remove it.

  1. Click on the Table widget.

  2. In the Builder tab under Columns, click Manage Filters for Account.

  1. Remove Gross Margin from the Account Selections list, and click OK.

[Alternative] Another option to remove Gross Margin.

  1. [Alternative] Deselect Gross Margin from the Available Members list, and click OK.

Note

A new member

Update the table display for when the Sales Revenue Account Input Control is selected.

Note

This was already done for
  1. Ensure Sales Revenue is selected.

Expand Order Date to view all years for Sales Revenue.

  1. Expand the (all) node of the Order Date hierarchy.

Now let’s hide the (all) node, as you are not interested to see Sales Revenue summed for all years.

  1. Right-click on the (all) node, and select Hide column.

  1. Quality Check: Does your chart look like this, with Sales Revenue account selected?

Let’s change the Input Control to view Gross Margin.

  1. Select Gross Margin from the Select Account Input Control. You will see the change reflected in the table.

  1. Save your story.

Update Time Series Chart

Update the Time Series chart to also be dynamic, by replacing the static Gross Margin with the selected Account Input Control.

  1. Open the Right Side Panel (Builder, Styling) from the View menu in the Top Toolbar, if not already open.

  2. Click on the Time Series chart.

  3. Click on the Data icon to get a list of all available objects in the data model, and then drag the new Select Account input control to the Accounts location.

  1. Remove the static Gross Margin from Accounts.

  1. Save your story.

Swap accounts.

  1. Select Sales Revenue account and see the chart and table gets updated.

  2. Quality Check: Does your Time Series Chart and Table look like this?

  3. Change the selection back to the Gross Margin account in the Select Account input control.
