Career Development Planning (CDP) Overview

Career Development Planning

SAP SuccessFactors Career Development Planning and Mentoring (CDP) enables employees to benefit from a wide range of career development and planning activities. CDP also provides managers with standardized methods to track the success of their direct reports.

Consisting of various development-related features, Career Development Planning provides tools and opportunities for the following areas:

  • Personal Growth
    • Undertaking relevant development activities.
    • Ensuring follow-through on development plans.
  • Career Planning
    • Identifying interesting future job roles.
    • Researching the skills and competencies needed to perform in those roles.
  • Corrective Remedies
    • Closing competency gaps with time-bound development plans.
  • Succession Candidates
    • Linking to development plans and career notes from Succession Planning.
  • Development Relationships
    • Connecting employees of different career levels in a development relationship where a more experienced person mentors a less experienced person.

Career Development Planning provides many important benefits, such as:

  • Focusing on engaging and retaining top talent by helping employees build career development plans and track their progress.
  • Allowing for personal growth as employees take on development activities that are relevant and actionable and where the follow-through is recorded.
  • Empowering employees to plan their careers through identifying job roles that are of interest and researching the competencies and skills necessary to do those jobs well.

CDP also opens the door to full customization of the development plan and integrations with other SAP modules, such as SAP SuccessFactors Learning or SAP SuccessFactors Succession.

Access to Career Development Planning

Career Development Planning tools can be found under both Development and Goals from the Main Menu, depending on the tool you're using. There are also quick cards on the Home screen to open Goals, Growth Portfolio, and Opportunity Marketplace.

Development and Goals drop-down options are highlighted in the screenshot displaying Home page.

Enable Latest Goal Management

The Latest Goal Management is available in the Upgrade Center and it will impact both Goal Management and Career Development. There is no way to upgrade one module without impacting the other.

To enable Latest Goal Management, navigate to Upgrade Center using action search and select the Latest Goal Management upgrade under Optional Upgrades.

Note

You can select Filter By: Goals to display only the relevant upgrades for Goal Management.

Once the upgrade is completed, all the existing templates will be placed into a read-only mode until they are converted. Details about converting templates and important information to be aware of are available in the CDP Implementation Guide: Converting Existing Goal Plan Templates | SAP Help Portal.

Considerations When Using Latest Goal Management

  • End users need Goal Management Access permission and Career Development Plan (CDP) Access Permission granted in RBP, as well as Goal Plan and Development Plan permissions at the template level to create goals.
  • Goals can be copied from other goal plans, including those from backup templates, with a maximum of 10 goals at a time, using the TGM/CDP Objective Transfer Wizard.
  • The start and due date of the goal being transferred must fall between the start and due dates of the goal plan. Otherwise, the users will be prompted to edit the dates before transferring the goal.
