Exploring Recommended Roles and Career Paths

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to understand role recommendations and create Career Paths.

Role Recommendations

The Career Worksheet is designed to help employees find roles they'd like to work toward as they develop their careers. When searching for new roles, employees can use Browse All Job Roles to search through all roles in the organization, or they can select Explore Recommended Roles to explore roles recommended to them based on their experience and ratings.

Upon choosing Explore Recommended Roles, there are two views available: Career Paths and Recommended Roles. Career Paths are detailed later in this lesson.

The Explore Recommended Roles Card View is shown, with the following sections: Top Matches, Next Career Move, Trending Roles.

The Recommended Roles view explores role recommendations that are organized into different sections:

Recommended Roles Sections

SectionDescriptionPrerequisites
Top Matches

The system uses an algorithm to suggest roles that best match an employee based on the following factors:

  • Skill and attribute ratings, and other factors configured by administrators in the Suggested Roles feature. See Configuring Suggested Roles for more information.
  • Skills and attributes with any of the following conditions met in Growth Portfolio:
    • Associated with the Core or Critical tag
    • Marked as passionate

Recommended roles with lower pay grades than users' current roles can be excluded. Additional details are available in the Configure Suggested Roles lesson.

Next Career MoveThe system retrieves the next role of an employee's current role from organizational career paths set by HR managers and administrators.
  • Enable Career Path V2 is selected in Provisioning.
  • Users have the View permission to the Career Path object under Miscellaneous Permissions.
Trending Roles

The system recommends roles with job openings from SAP SuccessFactors Recruiting.

If SAP SuccessFactors Recruiting isn't enabled, the system recommends roles with open positions from legacy Succession positions.

Make sure a Position Succession Nomination Method is being used.

Roles of People Like YouThe system uses role recommendations from the Career Explorer feature. You've enabled Career Explorer.

Each section recommends at most 16 roles. For systems migrated from Job Profile Builder to Talent Intelligence Hub, on each role, card users can add the role to Bookmarks in Opportunity Marketplace, or mark it as not interested.

Employees who do not find the role they're looking for under Recommended Roles can choose Browse All Job Roles to select roles from amongst all job roles in the organization.

The Browse All Job Roles window is open in the Career Worksheet.

Manage Career Paths

Career Path enables the creation of unique and complex organizational career paths. HR managers or other assigned roles can create multiple career paths, associate them with a given role, and restrict access as needed throughout the organization.

When Explore Recommended Roles is selected, the first screen that opens is the Career Paths View. The Career Paths View displays information about the expected path for a role. An employee's current role is the starting point of the chart, followed by recommended roles including the "Organizational path" roles from organizational career paths and the "Personalized path" roles that are highly matched with the employee.

A career path is shown from the explore recommended roles screen.
  • On the "Organizational path" role card, users can check a role's peer roles, if any.
  • On the "Personalized path" role card, users can learn about why a role is recommended to them. The recommendation reason could be one of the following factors according to their influence on the match score:
    • Matched skills: Users' skills and attributes match those required by the recommended role. For the first-layer recommended roles, the system compares users' current skills and attributes with those of the recommended role. For the subsequent layers, the system compares the skills and attributes of the previously recommended role with those of the current recommended role.
    • Same job family: The recommended role belongs to the same job family as users' current role.
    • Progression role: The recommended role is one of the next steps on users' career path.
    • Open positions: There are open positions available for the recommended role.
    • Popular: The recommended role is a popular target role within users' team.

When an employee is viewing the details of a specific current or target role from their Career Worksheet, if they choose View Career Paths only organizational career paths are shown.

Organizational Career Path Provisioning Options

Organizational Career Paths use the MDF Career Path object. In order to utilize organizational Career Paths within an instance, you must first enable the following Provisioning options. If you do not have access to Provisioning, please contact an SAP SuccessFactors implementation consultant or Professional Services.

  1. Confirm Career Path V2 is enabled.
  2. Confirm that Generic Objects and the Metadata Framework (MDF) is enabled.
  3. Confirm that the Attachment Manager is enabled.

Organizational Career Path Permissions

Once you have enabled Career Path V2 along with its prerequisites in Provisioning, navigate to Manage Permission Roles. Choose the role and edit it to navigate to the Metadata Framework Permissions. Be sure that you have permission to Configure Object Definition.

Organizational Career Path Object Definition

With the proper permissions, you are now able to edit the Career Path object by navigating to Configure Object Definitions.

The Career Path Object Definition page is displayed.

Once you are in this area, select Object Definition and then Career Path. Confirm that the object is active, that the Security option is set to Yes and the Permission Category is Miscellaneous Permissions as demonstrated in the figure.

Manage Organizational Career Path Permissions (RBP)

Select Manage Career Development on the Add Permissions page of Edit System Admin section.

In order to add and manage organizational Career Paths, role-based permissions must be enabled:

  1. Navigate to Manage Permission Roles using action search.
  2. Select the role for which you’re editing permissions.
  3. Choose Edit and change the basic information if necessary.
  4. Choose Next and navigate to the Administrator Permissions section.
  5. Select Manage Career Development.
  6. Grant Manage Career Path permission to the selected role.
    • Configure Career Path Node: This permission grants the right to specify which elements to display or hide on role nodes in the Career Path. Additional details about this feature are provided later in this section.
  7. Choose Next, review the role’s permissions, and choose Save. Don't forget to log out and back in for the new permissions to take effect.

Note

This permission only gives access to the Manage Career Path tab under HomeDevelopment.

Grant View and Edit Access to the Career Path Tool

The next step is to grant view and edit access to the Career Path tool. Without these permissions:

  • Nothing can be viewed within the Manage Career Path tab (a red error message appears).

  • Career Paths cannot be viewed from the Career Worksheet.

Under Miscellaneous Permissions within the desired RBP permission role, confirm View, Edit, and Import/Export permissions are selected for the Career Path object.

Select Miscellaneous Permissions and Career Path on the Add Permissions page.

This grants view or edit access to all Career Paths and all fields within each Career Path. Some roles may be assigned to create Career Paths (Edit), while others simply need to be able to read Career Path details (View).

Note

What you see in RPB may be confusing at this stage even if Career Path V2 is properly enabled. The Career Path RBP permissions in Miscellaneous Permissions are tied to whether you have Job Profile Builder enabled and not which Career Path version you have.

  • If Job Profile Builder is used, then RBP will display Career Path permissions in Miscellaneous Permissions. You will enable these permissions for users to see Career Path V2.
  • If Job Description Manager is still used, then RBP will display Legacy Career Path permissions. Do not worry! You will have Career Path V2 enabled, but in RBP you will still see Legacy Career Path. You need to enable Legacy career Path permissions.

Grant Field Actions

The Field Level Overrides dialog box is displayed.

To give access to particular fields within the Career Paths, expand the Field Level Overrides option. Specify to which fields the permission role should have special access.

Limit Access to Specific Career Paths

It's possible to limit access to specific Career Paths based on code, business unit, division, department, or any custom fields previously configured using the following steps:

  • Within the desired RBP permission role, select the Assignments tab.

  • Edit an existing assignment or select Add Role Assignment.

  • Edit any necessary access rights or target populations, then under Step 4 Define Target Criteria find the Miscellaneous Permissions section.

  • Next to Career Path, select the Restrict target criteria to button.

  • Specify the restrictions based on fields available in the dropdown menus. For example, you might want to limit a role to only see Career Paths in a specific division or department.

Update Miscellaneous Permissions on the Define Target Criteria step of Edit Role Assignment page.

Note

In the figure, the role is limited to only see Career Paths with a specific Division Code. If there are Career Paths in the system with other Division Codes, this role will not be able to see them.

Create and Manage Career Paths

The Career Path dialog box is displayed.

The next step is to create the organizational Career Paths. This can be done in the system by a person in a role with Manage Career Path and Edit permissions using the following steps:

  1. Navigate to DevelopmentCareer Path.
  2. Choose + Create New Career Path.
  3. Complete the relevant information for the Career Path. Note the following:
    • External Code and Name are required fields.
    • Other fields, such as Business Unit, Division, and Department, are optional. The Business Unit, Division, and Department criteria enable you to restrict access to the Career Path to employees belonging to these areas, as described earlier in this section.
  4. Choose Save.

Connect Job Roles

After adding Career Paths to the system, continue the process by connecting job roles (called role nodes) to paths.

Continue to step 1 or if you're on the main Career Path screen, select the Career Path Name and complete the following steps or enter the Career Path name in the search box and complete the following steps:

  1. Choose Select a Role.Screenshots related to Edit Career Path are displayed.
  2. Select a role name or search by a role. The screen above shows the list view, there is also a tree view to help with finding roles.
  3. Choose Save.

Update a Career Path

To learn about how to update a Career Path, watch this video:

Adding Career Path Nodes

Choose the next button on the bottom right of the screen to learn more about Career Path configuration.

The Vice President, HR role is highlighted.

Once you have added an initial role node, choose the down arrow to the right of the role and select from the following options to update the Career Path:

  • Add a lead-from role: This inserts a preceding role to the left of the current node.

  • Add a lead-to role: This inserts a forward-progression role to the right of the current node.

  • Add a peer role: This inserts a lateral role above or below the current node. You can add a maximum of two peer roles to any given node.

  • Replace node with a new role: This removes and replaces the current node with a role of your choice. This does not affect any other nodes in the Career Path.

  • Cascade delete roles: This removes the current node and any forward-progression nodes following it.

  • Delete Role: This removes the current node and connects the Lead-from role to the Lead-to role.

Career Path Nodes

The Career Path for a Human Resource employee is displayed.

The example above shows a Career Path with six role nodes. Each node displays information about key elements for the job role as follows:

  • The number of competencies needed for taking the job role

  • The number of skills needed for taking the job role

  • The number of people holding this role

  • The job family

  • The job code

Configure and Display Elements on Career Paths

The Configure Career Path Node permission mentioned earlier in this section allows permissioned users to decide which key elements will be viewable on a Career Path accessed from the Legacy Career Worksheet. For example, a client may not use skills in their job role setup, so they might want to remove the skills display. These node options are not shown in Latest Career Worksheet Career Paths.

The Configure Career Path Node option is highlighted on the Career Path page.
Select the Career Path Elements to display on the career path node.

To configure the display of elements on Career Paths, complete the following steps:

  1. Under Manage Career Path, choose Configure Career Path Node.
  2. Select the desired element checkboxes.
  3. Choose Save.

Career Paths Tab

The Career Path tab is displayed.

On the Manage Career Path page, you can view existing career paths to which you have permission under the Career Paths tab. Simply select one of the career path links in the list.

Note

Users with view permission will not see the Create New Career Path button.

Alternately, you can search career paths via a specific job role by selecting the Job Roles tab and choosing the role name for which you want to see all existing associated career paths.

If you select a job role for which more than one career path exists, a dropdown menu appears on the job role page enabling you to choose the career path you want to display.

End User

Once Career Paths have been created, the end user can view the Career Path from the Career Worksheet, as long as view permissions have been granted in RBP. For the Current Role or a Target Role, choose View Career Paths. From the details of a specific role, only Organizational Career Paths are shown.

Select a role and details about that role will be shown, with an option to add the role as a Target Role. This in turn adds the role to your Career Worksheet.

If you've selected Explore Recommended Roles, both organizational and personalized career paths will be shown.

Summary

  • Employees can use Explore Recommended Roles to find target roles for their career planning.
  • Career Paths allow HR managers to create and manage complex organizational career paths.
  • Grant view and edit access to the Career Path object to ensure visibility and functionality for users.
  • Configure Career Path Nodes to display relevant job role elements, such as competencies and skills.
  • End users can view and interact with Career Paths from the Career Worksheet, given appropriate permissions.
