Introducing Carbon Model Options

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to manage Carbon Model Options on the Travel Configuration Page.

Introduction to Managing Carbon Model Options

This lesson explains Carbon Model options in Concur Travel, their purpose, and how to enable them.

Concur Travel helps customers make informed travel decisions by:

  • Showing carbon emissions for each flight option, so travelers understand both cost and environmental impact.
  • Allowing users to easily compare flights and choose those with the lowest CO2 emissions.

Concur Travel supports two carbon models:

By selecting a Carbon Model, companies can guide travelers toward sustainable choices, apply travel policies, highlight company preferences, and share relevant messages.

To access the Carbon Model Options for Air setting on the travel configuration page, use CTRL+ F to search for the setting as depicted in the following graphic.

Admin settings page with travel configuration. A find bar shows the search term “carbon” with result 1/1. The highlighted section titled “Carbon Model Options for AIR” is bordered in yellow and its dropdown is set to “Don’t display carbon emissions.” Above is a TSA Secure Flight Options area; below are Class of Service Options and Rule Class Options.

Use the drop-down menu option to select the preferred model for the Carbon Model Options for Air setting. You can choose not to display the carbon emissions or select one of two available options:

  • Use Concur Modifications of CE (Netherlands)
  • Use UK DBEIS (DEFRA)

When you select one of the options to display the carbon emissions, the exact calculations appear as depicted in the following graphic.

Screen titled Carbon Model Options for Air. A yellow-highlighted selector shows a checkmark on “Don’t display carbon emissions,” with other choices “Use Concur modifications of CE (Netherlands)” and “Use UK DBEIS (DEFRA).” Panel 01 points to the UK DBEIS (DEFRA) setting with metric and English unit multipliers by flight distance; Panel 02 points to the Concur CE (Netherlands) setting with its own multipliers.

The CO2 emission units are displayed according to the mile/km settings the user has set up in System Settings area of Profile Settings:

  • If miles are the measurement unit chosen, then CO2 emissions will display in lbs
  • If km is the measurement unit chosen, then CO2 emissions will display in kg

The following graphic is an example of the user experience with miles as a measurement unit and indicates where the information is displayed to the traveler on the Air Search Results page.

Flight search page with Lufthansa selected for a Frankfurt–Paris trip. The selected flights show nonstop times and price options, and CO2 emissions are visible; 176 lbs CO2 is highlighted on both outbound and return.

The following graphic is an example of the user experience with km as a measurement unit and indicates where the information is displayed to the traveler on the Air Search Results page.

Flight search page with an Air China itinerary selected from Beijing to Singapore and return, both via Shenzhen. The screen shows segment times and a price of $901.70 that requires approval. CO2 emissions are visible and highlighted for each leg: 300 kg CO2e and 398 kg CO2e.

When the Carbon Model Options for Air are enabled, the flight results displayed to the user can be sorted by emissions. The user can select Emissions manually from the Sorted by dropdown menu on the Search Results page, or the options Sorting—Shop by Fares Default and Sorting—Shop by Schedule and Flex Faring Default on the configuration page can be set to Emissions. If these options are enabled on the configuration page, the Sorted by field will default to Emissions.

Flight search interface comparing Manual Sorting and Default Sorting. In Manual Sorting, a Sort By dropdown shows options such as Stops, Duration, Carrier, and Emissions, with Emissions highlighted. In Default Sorting, results are sorted by Emissions and display Lufthansa flights from Frankfurt (FRA) to Prague (PRG), nonstop, including a 1h 5m flight (Lufthansa 1392) with a highlighted emissions value of 159 lbs CO2.
