Administering Server Groups

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to configure Server Groups in the Central Management Console (CMC).

Exclusive/Non-exclusive Server Groups

Organizing Your Scheduling Servers into Logical Groups

When an object is scheduled, the first available Adaptive Job Server resource will be used by default to run the job on SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025 (Use the first available server choice). Alternatively, other electing algorithm can be used if administrators create some logical server groups in CMC (Give preference to servers in the selected group choice or Only use servers in the selected group choice).

Definition:
  • Administrators can create server groups to ensure high availability, optimizing performance, and enhancing the scalability and fault tolerance of the BI platform.
  • Server groups allow you to organize your SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025 servers into logical groups of servers.
Considerations:

The following are considerations when using server groups:

  • When you select a server group, you can view only a subset of the servers.

  • Server groups allow you to maximize your system for users in different location.

You can set up a server group to include additional processing settings. You can associate an object with a server group, so the object is processed by a specific group of servers. Also, you can associate scheduled objects with a particular server group, and to make sure scheduled objects are sent to the correct destination.

If you group your servers by service type, you can configure the objects to be processed by servers that have been maximized for those type of objects.

Exclusive Server Groups:

Exclusive server groups allow SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025 servers to be dedicated to tasks or functions.

  • Exclusive server groups contain servers or server groups that are not part of any other server group or common server pool.
  • When a Server Group is created as Exclusive Server Group, then the servers part of this group cannot be assigned to any other Server Group (Exclusive or Non Exclusive) and Servers added to Exclusive Server Group are excluded from the common pool.
  • This enables you to create server groups that are isolated from the general load of the BI system.

Note

Follow this link to know how to create an exclusive server group in CMC: (To create an exclusive server group).
Exclusive Server Group

Non-Exclusive Server Groups can be created as well.

Non-Exclusive Server Groups:

Non-exclusive server groups allow SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025 servers to be part of multiple groups simultaneously.

  • Administrators choose this option to allocate servers based on specific tasks or functions without being restricted to exclusive groups.
  • Non-exclusive server groups can contain servers or server groups that are part of any other non-exclusive server group or the common server pool.

Note

Follow this link to know how to create an exclusive server group in CMC: (To create a non-exclusive server group).
Non-Exclusive Server Group

Server Subgroups

Server Group Membership

Definition:

Subgroups of servers allow you to further organize your servers.

Considerations:

The following are considerations when using server subgroups:

  • A subgroup is just a server group that is a member of another server group.

  • There are two ways to set up subgroups:

    • You can change the subgroups of a server group.
    • you can make one server group a member of another.

Summary

  • Administrators create server groups to ensure high availability, optimize performance, and enhance scalability and fault tolerance of the BI platform.
  • Exclusive server groups dedicate servers to specific tasks or functions, ensuring predictable performance by isolating critical processes.
  • Non-exclusive server groups allow servers to be part of multiple groups simultaneously, providing flexibility for task allocation.
  • Server groups can be organized logically to maximize the system for users in different locations and associate objects with specific server groups for processing.
  • Server subgroups further organize servers within larger groups, either by changing the subgroups of a server group or making one server group a member of another.
