Configuring a Watch and Alerts

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to configure a watch and alerts.

Metric Types

Metrics List

SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025 provides a lot of predefined metrics by default. You can view them in the Metrics List page within BI Admin Studio.

Definition:
  • Administrator can access the list of Metrics by opening the Metrics tile in the Monitoring area of the BI Admin Studio.
  • There are hundreds of metrics available by default (the tile displays a total). This list of metrics is organized in the following "tree" structure.
Metrics Tree Structure

View Metrics

In this exercise, you will view the metrics and monitor how much disk space is available for the BI system.

Derived Metrics

A Customer Metric

Besides predefined metrics, administrators can also create additional metrics to set a customized monitoring (for instance: % of connected users on SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025). New metrics are called 'derived metrics' in BI Admin Studio.

Definition:
  • A derived metric is user defined formula incorporating one or more of the existing metrics with mathematical expressions.
  • A derived metric has the same functionality as other metrics.
Derived Metrics

Watches and Alerts

Metrics, Watches and Alerts

In BI Admin Studio, a derived metrics provide only live data view by default (no history data). If you want to see history data view of a derived metric, a Watch including this derived metric has to be created to collect and store history data periodically (history data is collected every 60s by default).

Definition:
  • A Watch includes one or more metrics and one or two thresholds (Danger and Caution).
  • Any metric can be included in a Watch.
  • An alert is sent by a Watch only when one threshold is reached for a metric included in a Watch.
  • The Monitoring application evaluates each Watch on a periodic basis. If either of the thresholds have been crossed, the application will check and update the status.
Watches

Alerts Page

A Watch is able to send alerts when one threshold is reached for a metric included in a Watch. You can consult all alerts triggered by all Watches in the Alerts Page in BI Admin Studio.

Definition:
  • Alerts notify selected users when Watch rules have been satisfied (by crossing either the Caution or Danger thresholds).
  • These notifications can be sent via e-mail or within the Alerts Page of the BI Admin Studio.
Alerts Page

Throttling Criteria

You can also control the triggering frequency of alerts in the Watch properties.

Definition:
  • To reduce repetitive alert notification, you can set in a Watch how long a caution or danger state must persist before triggering the alert.
  • You can also select a probe to execute when the criteria are met in a Watch rule.
Throttling Criteria

Configure a Watch and an Alert

In this exercise, you will configure a watch and an alert.

Probes

Testing A Platform Functionality

Probes are available in BI Admin Studio. They can test a platform functionality, like the viewing functionality for Web Intelligence documents or the health of the Central Management Server (CMS).

Definition:

Administrator uses Probes to provide systematic and detailed approach to test the functionality of SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025.

  • Another type of monitoring of SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025 is the use of probes.
  • Unlike watches that monitor the status of a server, probes test the functionality of the system.
  • Probes can be viewed on the Probes tile of the BI Admin Studio.

    Note

Probes are important tool for troubleshooting, performance tuning, or security analysis.
Metrics for Probes:

A Probe contains and gives always two metrics:

  • Result metric: Execution status of the probe.
    • "1": Failed (means that the execution of probe has failed).
    • "2": Pass (means that the execution of probe is successful).
  • Round Trip Time metric: Execution time of the probe (in milliseconds).
Preset Probes

SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025 Probe Types

ProbeDescription
Health

This type of probe generates metrics.

Diagnostic

This type of probe generates reports on system information.

Hybrid

This type of probe functions as both a health probe and a diagnostic probe.

Preset Probes:

There are nine preset probes in the BI Admin Studio:

  • BI Launch Pad
  • CMS Cache
  • CMS DB Connection
  • CMS Logon Logoff
  • CMS Ping
  • Crystal Reports Service (Processing Server)
  • Crystal Reports Service (Report Application Server)
  • Start Stop Servers
  • Web Intelligence

Also, you can register (add) custom probes to your system. There are two possible sources for custom probes:

Summary

  • Administrators can view the list of Metrics by opening the Metrics tile in the Monitoring area of the BI Admin Studio.
  • Hundreds of metrics are available by default and displayed within the tile.
  • The list of metrics is organized in a structured 'tree' format.
  • A derived metric is a user-defined formula that combines one or more existing metrics using mathematical expressions.
  • A watch includes one or more metrics and up to two thresholds (Danger and Caution), which the Monitoring application evaluates periodically.
  • Alerts notify selected users when watch rules have been satisfied by crossing either the Caution or Danger thresholds, via email or the Alerts Page of the BI Admin Studio.
  • Throttling criteria can be set to reduce repetitive alert notifications by specifying how long a caution or danger state must persist before triggering the alert.
