Administering Servers Using the Central Management Console (CMC)

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to administer servers using the Central Management Console (CMC).

Central Management Console (CMC)

Central Hub For Administrators

The Central Management Console (CMC) is a web application running on the web tier in BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025. This web application is dedicated for being used by application administrators.

Considerations:
The Central Management Console (CMC) is important to administrator as it serves as the central hub for managing and configuring various aspect of SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025.
  • CMC is a Web-based tool used to do administrative tasks like:
    • Content management (BI content like folders, reports, universes).
    • User management (internal and external users and groups).
    • Server management (nodes, servers, services, server groups).
  • It also allows you to publish, organize, and configure security settings.
  • You can do all of these administrative tasks through a web browser on any machine that can connect to the server.
You, as an administrator, can log on to the CMC to change the user preference settings.
  • Only members of the Administrators group can change management settings, unless explicitly granted the permission to do so.
  • Delegated administrators can also be assigned to the CMC to grant some users privileges to do minor administrative tasks.

The Servers Management area of the CMC is your primary tool for server management tasks. It gives a list of servers in your deployment. For most management and configuration tasks, you need to select a server in the list and choose a command from the Manage or Action menu.

The Navigation Tree

The navigation tree in the Central Management Console (CMC) allows administrators to manage several types of objects on SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025. More particularly, the Servers area in CMC is the dedicated page for managing all servers installed on the application layer side.

Server Management:
The navigation tree on the left side of the Servers Management area in CMC gives a number of ways to view the Servers list. Select items in the navigation tree to display the servers in the Details pane.

Note

Server Operation

Servers Area in CMC

In the Servers area in CMC, you can see at a glance the live status of all application servers on SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025 (for instance: Running or Stopped, Enabled or Disabled).

Server Status:
  • When you disable a server in SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025, you prevent it from receiving and responding to new report requests.
  • You don't actually have to stop the server process. The benefit of disabling is that you allow the server to fulfill any running report requests that are in its queue. Only new incoming requests will be refused (like viewing reports) or in a pending state (like scheduling reports) when a server is disabled.

Note

  • The CMS must be running in order for you to enable or disable servers.

  • The administrator can't disable the last remaining CMS. If the CMS is stopped, the health and the behavior of all servers running on the BI platform will be corrupted.

Node Management

Application Node

SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025 servers are always linked to a node. If nodes can be viewed from the Central Management Console (CMC), node management (create, delete, stop or start a node) has to be completed by administrators only from a dedicated client application called Central Configuration Manager (CCM).

Definition:
  • A node is a group of SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025 servers that run on the same host (machine).
  • Servers on a node run under the same host user account.
  • One host can have many nodes, so you can run processes under different host user accounts for each node.
  • Nodes can be managed from the Central Configuration Manager (CCM) on the system host. You can:
    • Stop/Start/Restart a Node.
    • Manage Servers (view, stop, start).
    • Add/Delete a Node.

Note

Central Configuration Manager (CCM) is recommended to be used by administrators when working on a node at the system host level. Central Management Console (CMC) is recommended to be used by administrators when working on servers and services at the content level on SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025.
Node Management

A running node is based on a service running at the operating system level: the Server Intelligence Agent (SIA).

Server Intelligence Agent (SIA):
  • A Server Intelligence Agent (SIA) process manages and monitors only servers from a single node.
  • SIA is started or stopped manually from the Central Configuration Manager (CCM). It cannot be done from the Central Management Console (CMC).
    • When an SIA is started from CCM, servers on a node are started. This action can take a couple of minutes.
    • When an SIA is stopped from CCM, servers on a node are stopped. This action can take a couple of seconds.

Summary

  • The Central Management Console (CMC) is a web-based tool serving as the central hub for administrators to manage and configure various aspects of the BI platform, including user, content, and server management.
  • Only members of the Administrators group can change management settings in the CMC, unless explicitly granted permission, and delegated administrators can be assigned for minor tasks.
  • The Servers Management area of the CMC is the primary tool for server management tasks, allowing administrators to select servers and perform actions through a navigation tree.
  • Disabling a server in the BI platform prevents it from receiving new report requests but allows it to complete outstanding tasks, with the CMS required to be running for enable/disable actions.
  • A node is a group of BI platform servers running on the same host, managed by a Server Intelligence Agent (SIA) which starts and stops servers as requested by the CMC.
