Configuring Servers Using the Central Management Console (CMC)

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to configure servers using the Central Management Console (CMC).

Server Addition

Multiple Instances

When a Server Intelligence Agent (SIA) is running, related application servers are running on SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025. For redundancy and performance reasons, administrators can easily add new application servers from the Central Management Console (CMC).

Considerations:
  • You can run several server instances of the same SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025 server on the same machine by adding a new server (for instance, create an additional Adaptive Job Server).
  • The new server appears in the Servers management area of the CMC.
  • Running multiple instances of the same SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 2025 server makes them redundant. So new incoming requests will be automatically load-balanced between running instances by the Central Management Server (CMS).

Server Cloning

Cloning in CMC

For redundancy and performance reasons, administrators can also add new application servers by cloning current servers from the Central Management Console (CMC).

Considerations:
  • Cloning an existing server gives you the option to create a new server quickly to expand your deployment.
  • The cloned server contains the configuration settings of the original server.
  • The cloned server appears in the Servers management area of the CMC.
  • Running cloned servers makes servers redundancy. So new incoming requests will be automatically load-balanced between original and cloned servers by the Central Management Server (CMS).

Modify Server Properties

Server Properties in CMC

The application server configuration is set by using general and specific properties. In the Central Management Console (CMC), administrators can view and edit the properties for common services of an application server in order to optimize its functioning.

Definition:
You can change server settings through the Central Management Console (CMC) in two ways:
  • On the Properties screen for the server.
  • On the Edit Common Services screen for the server.
Stale Flag:
  • Not all changes happen immediately. If a setting can’t change immediately, the Properties and Edit Common Services screens display both the current setting (in red text) and the modified setting.
  • When you return to the Servers management area, the server will be marked as Stale (with a red flag).
  • When you restart the server, it will use the modified settings and the Stale flag is removed from the server.

Configuration Templates

Setting and Using A Server Configuration Template in CMC

When administrators set properties for common services of an application server, they can choose to set and use a configuration template for a service. Configuration templates are optional, but it standardizes properties settings on servers using the same service.

Considerations:
  • You can select the set configuration template setting for each type of service for a server in Central Management Console (CMC).

    Note

You cannot set multiple configuration templates for a service. You can follow the link to view details on setting a configuration template: (To set a configuration template).
  • As a result, the configuration template set for the service type that you selected is defined according to the settings of the current server. So other servers of the same type hosting the same services are not impacted by this configuration template.
  • If you enable the use configuration template setting on a service for a server, this server will be automatically and immediately reconfigured to match the configuration template set.

    Note

For instance, the Service Startup Timeout (seconds) has been changed from 1200 to 700 and set as a configuration template on the Adaptive Processing Server. When enabling the use configuration template setting on another Adaptive Processing Server, it will inherit automatically this new setting value (700). You can follow the link to view details on applying a configuration template: (To apply a configuration template to a server).

Manage Servers in the CMC

In this exercise, you will manage servers in the CMC.

Summary

  • You can run multiple server instances on the same BI platform server on a single machine by adding a new server.
  • Cloning an existing server allows you to create a new server with the same configuration settings to expand your deployment.
  • Server settings can be changed through the Central Management Console, with some changes requiring a server restart to take effect.
  • Using a configuration template ensures that any new or existing server of that type will have identical settings.
  • The Central Management Console allows administrators to add new servers, select services on a server, and manage server states.
