Explaining SAP DFPS in Compatibility Scope

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to explain what the Compatibility Scope is and how it is relevant for Defense & Security customers transitioning to SAP S/4HANA

SAP DFPS in Compatibility Scope

This figure shows the correlation between SAP ERP as part of Business Suite and the SAP S/4HANA solution.

The SAP S/4HANA solution is composed of components rebuilt to maximize the in-memory database capabilities, as well as Compatibility Scope items. These components are provided in limited scope until 2025 in order to allow for smoother transition of our ECC customers.

One of those Compatibility Scope items is the Industry Solution DFPS, under the restrictions specified here.

For additional and official info, refer to the "Frequently Asked Questions on Compatibility Packs" document on SAP Help.

This schematic drawing shows the gradual growth of the simplified (native SAP S/4HANA) scope as part of the SAP S/4HANA solution until the 1809 version.

While the Compatibility Scope items remain largely unchanged, the Native SAP S/4HANA scope aims at covering the back-office capabilities of not only ERP, but also of additional components that used to be a part of SAP Business Suite.

Guidance for Defense & Security and SAP S/4HANA

Guidance for Defense & Security in SAP S/4HANA:

  • Situation

Starting with SAP S/4HANA 1909 there are two different on-premise SAP Defense & Security (D&S) solutions to consider. The first one is the Defense Forces & Public Security (DFPS) ECC solution that was released on SAP S/4HANA 1610 in compatibility mode and will be supported until 2025. The second one is the new SAP S/4HANA Defense & Security solution that provides native industry enablement of Defense capabilities.

With SAP S/4HANA 1909, the following compatibility mode-related restrictions apply, (s. note 2810120):

    • Distributed system landscape scenarios ("Deployed Server") are not available (BF. DFPS_PM_DIS_SIG must not be activated). SAP Mobile Defense and Security (SAP MDS) is not available. BF DFPS_MDS_INTEGRATION and DFPS_MDS_INTEGRATION_2 must not be activated.
    • SAP Military Data Exchange (SAP MDE) is not available.
    • SAP Defense MILSTRIP Purchasing (SAP DMP, Foreign Military Sales) is not available.
    • Defense-specific eSOA services are not available.
    • Business Content in SAP Business Intelligence (SAP BI) for the SAP for Defense Forces and Public Security solution, as well as the Defense-specific BI-extractors are not available.
  • Background
    • SAP Defense & Security product and solution management teams initiated the build of a next-generation industry solution. The new SAP S/4HANA Defense & Security is planned to be delivered over three years starting with the first major delivery in the 1909 release.
    • It will replace DFPS and should include the following major functionality*by 2022: Defense & Security Master Data, NSNs, Condition Codes, and Advice Codes, Loans & Pools, Personal & Functional Equipment, Force Life Cycle Support, Capability/Readiness Analytics, Roles and Authorizations controlled by Action and Information (RANA), Force Element options modeling and costs, Planning Board, Object Role Change, Mission Task List, Catalog Replenishment, Disconnected (Strategic) and Deployed Server (Light).
  • Response of SAP
    • Defense customers planning new installations or installed base customers with plans for new installations can continue to use SAP S/4HANA and the industry solution in compatibility mode (less deployed server). Also see the Compatibility Scope Matrix Part 1: SAP Force Organization and Personnel for Defense and Security and SAP Force Sustainment for Defense and Security.
    • Net new customers without the immediate need for defense functionality can use SAP S/4HANA as their digital core directly.
    • All customers are recommended to transition to the new industry solution from the SAP S/4HANA 2020 release onwards.
    • Future plans are documented in the published roadmap and documented in close conjunction with the SAP defense user group
