Explaining SAP Fiori Launchpad

Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:
  • Explain what SAP Fiori Launchpad is
  • Describe the concept of Business Roles
  • List several defense-specific applications
  • Differentiate between applications and application variants

SAP Fiori Launchpad: Basics

Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn about the SAP Fiori Launchpad and the terms used when you are navigating its roles and applications.

We will discuss how to access the Force Elements and their structures using the SAP Fiori apps.

We will talk about Managing Force Elements in details.

We will explain some day-in-life scenarios for an organizational planner, where the Force Elements have to be edited to accommodate and reflect organizational changes.

Lastly, we will show how the Business Partner Integration concept is to be implemented for a defense customer in SAP S/4HANA.

In this lesson, we would like you to orientate within the SAP Fiori Launchpad, and familiarize yourself with its features and a few of the terms when you are using the new SAP GUI approach and its SAP Fiori/UI5 applications

The home page is the heart of the launchpad and the central access point for SAP Fiori apps.

The page contains tiles, which are used to launch apps and can also show additional application information. Users can personalize the home page by adding, removing, and grouping app tiles. Because the launchpad is role-based, only apps that are relevant for the user's role profile are shown.

A space and its pages structure the most relevant apps for users with a certain business role. We recommend including only information and apps that users need to begin their daily business.

Launchpad spaces display tiles that allow users to launch apps. They can also show additional application information. Users can personalize the home page by adding and removing apps, or bundling them in groups. As the launchpad is role-based, only apps that are relevant for the user's role profile are shown.

To enable the "spaces" view, you first must open the settings menu located by selecting the icon with your initials. When the settings menu is open, navigate to the Spaces tab, select the check box and REMEMBER TO SAVE the changes.

The user actions menu offers a range of user-specific services. It is accessed by choosing the icon or photo on the right-hand side of the shell bar. The user actions menu is available in all SAP Fiori screens.

The following options are always available, regardless of the current context:

  • General settings and preferences
  • A catalog of available apps (the app finder)
  • Objects and apps recently visited by the user
  • An About dialog, with details about the SAP Fiori launchpad or app version
  • Sign Out option for logging off the SAP Fiori launchpad

The following options depend on the current context:

  • On the launchpad home page, the user actions menu contains an Edit Home Page feature for personalizing the content of the home page.
  • For some apps, the user actions menu might also offer app-specific settings.

In addition, customers can activate additional options for contacting the support team or giving feedback.

Notifications

Users can access notifications by choosing the Notifications button on the right of the shell bar.

The notification list displays system-generated notifications from various sources, such as the workflow inbox or chat notifications. Notifications can be prioritized and organized into groups of similar items. From the notification message, users can navigate to the underlying app. Depending on the configuration, notifications can also offer buttons for taking immediate action.

Component descriptions:

Tile

A tile is a container that represents an app on the SAP Fiori launchpad home page. Tiles are used for launching apps and presenting them on the launchpad.

App Finder

The app finder is  an "app store"-like interface that lists all the apps that a user might potentially use. The app finder replaces the tile catalog.

Shell Bar

The launchpad shell bar is always visible at the top of the screen. It offers access to cross-application functions, such as the enterprise search, SAP CoPilot, the user actions menu, and notifications. It also contains the page title with further app navigation options, as well as a branding area. When the user opens an app, a Back  button appears on the left of the shell bar.

Enterprise Search

The SAP Fiori launchpad offers an enterprise search function that searches across all apps and business objects.

This figure explains how to access the Help function in SAP Fiori launchpad.

This figure shows the menu of the Help function in SAP Fiori launchpad.

From the Help menu, there are two main options:

  1. The Learning Center (LC)

The LC has authored and published learning material that can help the user understand the process.

  2. The Community Portal

The community portal is a peer contributing collaboration space.

Search and Help Functions

This figure shows the entry point for the enterprise search.

This figure shows the Type Selection.

The search can be restricted to objects of a particular type.

This can be done before the search is triggered, either by using the type selector, or by typing the object type into the search field and selecting the respective suggestion.

To filter a result list by object type, users can select the type tabs, or the respective section in the filter panel.

The textual search is also built to work without type restrictions, in that case it provides results from different types (such as materials, requisitions and so on), grouped by the type.

This figure shows an example of the enterprise search, here the entry of "manage force".

Business Roles

SAP delivers Business Roles as templates. These are starting points that you can copy and refine to meet your real needs.

A business role is an abstract construct that represents a job that a person performs. The business role includes standard business and work-related activities that are related to the role-holder's workplace responsibilities.

Note

A single business role does not necessarily equate to a person's complete job, for example, in lean organizations or locations some people can have responsibility for multiple business roles.

The Business Roles listed above are examples of the functional design whereby different activities are combined in the functionality provided for individual transactions in the apps and Launchpad. The intent was to put all of the required functionality regarding one group of roles, for example, the organization planners or the logistical planners, into one main role. In a real world implementation, it is always strongly advised the customer reviews, and more importantly defines, the roles to best suit their individual business needs.

The following link is an SAP library to the roles specific for D&S (DFPS).

When the spaces function is turned on, the business roles assignments dictates what is displayed on the launchpad and app. Template layouts can be amended as well as they do not restrict access or authorization.

Defense-Specific Applications

Planning organizations in detail requires activities across multiple modules, which complicates the process. In order to make this easier and more intuitive, we created the ability to edit all relevant data models and objects in SAP Fiori and Structure Workbench.

In the new SAP Fiori application, Manage Force Elements, covers the different data aspect for FEs and their structure.

The App Man FE is adapted into role specific app variants. (that is, dependent on your Business Role):

  • Capability Planner
  • Material Planner
  • Maintenance Planner

The SAP Fiori apps reference library provides the following information:

  • Overview of all SAP Fiori apps available today
  • Key information for each app, including the technical data you need for installation and configuration
  • Configuration information required to integrate classic SAP GUI and WebDynpro applications into the SAP Fiori launchpad
  • Data for previous app versions
  • Aggregated installation and configuration information for a selection of apps
  • Direct navigation to related resources, such as app documentation, Product Availability Matrix, and Maintenance Planner
  • Recommendations for SAP Fiori apps fitting to your needs

The library can be accesses online at SAP Fiori Apps Reference Library (ondemand.com).

Applications and Application Variants

The Force Management SAP Fiori App and variants facilitate the following:

  • It helps to ensure that users access a standard information base. The interfaces are uniform and as user-friendly as possible for all user groups.
  • It focuses on the terms used by users and the process steps to be carried out rather than on the technical solution.
  • They are based on the technical functionalities of the relevant components to ensure that data is stored consistently and user authorizations are always observed.
  • It enables configuration based on the needs of various user groups by means of application variants.
  • The scope of functionality of each single variant of the app is defined in accordance with the fields of activity of each individual user group, and can be modified in Customizing.

App Variants: How Changes Affect Variants

Two options to adapt an application:

  • UI Adaptation mode at runtime - For key user. UI changes to the original app or a variant are not applied to other variants! Any UI changes in adaptation mode to the original app or variants are only valid for them.
  • Adaptation Project in the back-end system - UI changes to the original app that are made can be applied to the original app and the variants as well.
