Creating Invisible Launchers

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to create Invisible Launchers for WalkMe solutions.

Overview

Watch the video to get an overview of Invisible Launchers in WalkMe.

An Invisible Launcher is a hidden button that the user is not aware they are clicking. It can be used to block a click action or to launch another piece of WalkMe content.

When to Use an Invisible Launcher?

Invisible Launchers will proactively bring value to your WalkMe Solutions.

Make non-mandatory fields mandatory.

Block the Save button until all desired fields are completed using Launcher Display Rules, or a Smart Walk-Thru that checks the form.

Proactively launch a WalkMe Solution

Use an Invisible Launcher to launch WalkMe guidance instead of Auto Play rules - you can even combine this strategy with a Mini Menu!

Redirect users to the correct location

Automatically redirect users away from entering information in the wrong location - for example, forcing the user to always create a contact through an account, and not as a standalone.

Next steps

In the following section, learn how to design an Invisible Launcher to address a use case similar to those listed above.

How to Create an Invisible Launcher?

Watch the video to know more about how to create an Invisible Launchers in WalkMe.

Creating an Invisible Launcher is very similar to creating a traditional Launcher; only the design is different.

Next we'll take a look at how to make the Launcher invisible - or transparent - and what types of solutions you can attach to it.

How to Create an Invisible Launcher?

Please note, the steps do not cover how to create a Launcher as this was covered previously in Builder I, but how to design and test a Launcher that looks invisible to the user.

  1. Navigate to the Launcher Design
    • For existing Launchers, select the Launcher in the Editor, then click Change Launcher or click the Launcher itself.
      • Select the Customize tab.
      • Hover over a previously made design and click the pencil icon to Edit the design, or create a new design by clicking Add New.
    • For a newly created Launcher, the colors can be adjusted in the Design section in the Setup tab.

Watch the video to know more. Note that the video doesn't support audio.

  2. Customize the Launcher
    • Make sure to adjust the size of your Launcher to fully cover the element you wish to block - otherwise the user will still be able to click the element.
    • Click the small ghost icon to the right of the colors to automatically make all colors transparent (it will even adjust the hover and click states)! You'll want to add a color back in for the border as this will help greatly with testing - it's hard to test something you cannot see!

Watch the video to know more. Note that the video doesn't support audio.

  3. Attach the Launcher to a WalkMe Solution

Regardless of whether you will attach a ShoutOut, Smart Walk-Thru, Resource, or Shuttle to your Launcher - don't forget to link it!

In the Interaction tab for the Launcher, select your desired solution from the Action drop-down.

The video shows attaching of a Smart Walk-Thru to the Launcher.

Watch the video to know more. Note that the video doesn't support audio.

  4. Add a Display Condition
    • Use the Rule Engine to determine under what conditions your Launcher will appear.
    • Enable the toggle Constantly check the condition to decide whether to remove the item so that WalkMe will stop displaying the Launcher as soon as the user satisfies the condition.
Image shows how to use the Rule Engine to determine under what conditions the Launcher will appear.

What to Attach to an Invisible Launcher?

Let's take a look at two examples as follows.

Smart Walk-Thru

Most frequently, a Smart Walk-Thru is attached to an Invisible Launcher. This approach is the most flexible for different use cases. See two Smart Walk-Thru solutions as follows.

Redirect and Guide Users
Use Page Action, Auto Steps, and regular Smart Walk-Thru Steps to continue moving the user through a process.Image shows how to use Page Action, Auto Steps, and regular Smart Walk-Thru Steps to continue moving the user through a process.
Check My Form
Run a series of checks to determine if the user should be able to proceed of not.

Use Split Steps to check that each field in a form is filled out correctly. If everything looks good, the last step is an Auto Step to click Save/Next for the user, and they will never know this additional check happened!

Image shows how to run a series of checks to determine if the user should be able to proceed of not.
ShoutOut

Of course you can also attach a ShoutOut to stop the user's action completely!

When the user clicks on the Invisible Launcher element, the user will not be able to proceed and will always encounter the ShoutOut.

Watch the video to know more. Note that the video doesn't support audio.

If you do not want the user to always receive the ShoutOut when clicking the Invisible Launcher, you have two options:

  1. Add Display Condition rules to your Launcher so only certain users/scenarios will encounter the ShoutOut.

You will need to make sure these rules are always being checked.

  2. Add links to your ShoutOut to allow the user to progress with either a Shuttle or an Auto Step.

Testing your Invisible Launcher Solution

Use Preview Mode or publish the solutions to a Test environment to test your Invisible Launcher.

If you are using Selective Preview Mode, make sure you select all elements associated with the solution, including the Launcher, ShoutOut, and any linked WalkMe Solutions.

Once you are satisfied with the look and feel of your solution, don't forget to make the border transparent before publishing to your live environment!

Hands-on Practice: Designing an Invisible Launcher

Instructions

In this activity, you'll be designing an Invisible Launcher given a building request from the KLAW team.

Introduction
Image shows the Create Team Account form.

The KLAW team would like to use WalkMe to block the Create Account button on the Create Team Account form to prevent the user from creating a new team account unless they have filled in the phone number field. The other fields on the page are already mandatory by default, but the phone number field is not.

They want to display a message to the user to complete the phone number field if they try to create a team account without one.

Bonus: Add mandatory asterisks to the right of First name *, Last name *, Email address *, and Phone number * using Launchers. Have them blend in seamlessly with the site so they look like they are part of the site rather than WalkMe.

Step 1 - Tips
  • Make sure the Launcher size completely covers the Create Account button.
  • Use the ghost icon to easily convert the Launcher design to that of an Invisible Launcher.
  • Add a border color to make it easier to test your Launcher.
  • Preview all related items and troubleshoot your Launcher!
    • Arrange Layer Order (z-index), Element's Behavior, Display Condition, Constant check, and Lock to Element settings may need to be used.
    • Make sure the Launchers appear consistently when opening and closing the form.

Start building!

Now that you have all the resources and guidance needed for building, go ahead and open up your Editor and the KLAW site to start building!
