Developing ShoutOut Engagement Strategies

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to implement moderate and aggressive ShoutOut strategies to boost user engagement.

ShoutOut Engagement Strategies

ShoutOuts are designed to draw your user’s attention to the featured text. ShoutOuts can be built with an action button that will launch another WalkMe item. With just one click, the user can start a Smart Walk-Thru, play a video or access an article through a Resource, activate a Shuttle to another page, or open the Player Menu.

Recall that the strategies used to engage your users can be divided into three categories:

  1. Passive Strategy
  2. Moderate Strategy
  3. Aggressive Strategy

In this lesson, we will discuss Moderate and Aggressive strategies as they relate to ShoutOuts. Note that because ShoutOuts automatically appear on the page to the user and will likely block a portion of the page, generally, ShoutOuts are not considered a Passive strategy.

Content for this strategy will appear to the user at the point of need but does not enforce the user's behavior.

Contextual Information

There are times where your webpage may not contain all the necessary information for a user to complete a task.

In this case, a ShoutOut with the information can be displayed to the user for reference and they can close it if they wish.

The idea here is that the information is there for the user but no interaction with the ShoutOut is required from the user.

Notifications that Do Not Block the User

A ShoutOut can appear to the user in a location on the web page that does not block navigation of the site.

These notifications allow the user to close the ShoutOut using the X button and do not appear too frequently to the user.

With this strategy, the ShoutOut appears automatically to the user at the point of need and will not let the user continue if there is incorrect behavior.

ShoutOuts that Appear Frequently

Remember, Auto Play allows you to set content to automatically start playing, regardless of user input.

ShoutOuts that appear frequently to the user until a certain requirement is met are considered Aggressive.

These requirements can be set up in the Rule Engine by selecting Play according to a rule in the Auto Play section for the ShoutOut.

In addition, you can also define your Auto Play Frequency to play once a day, once or always, in the Engagement section, as shown in the image.

Note

Be careful and use frequently appearing ShoutOuts very sparingly. These should only be used for extremely important mandatory notices where user engagement is required.

ShoutOuts that Block the User

These ShoutOuts may take up the whole screen and prevent the user from moving forward until they interact with the ShoutOut.

This includes mandatory ShoutOuts, where the X button is removed and therefore require the user to click the Action button to continue.

Prevent users from exiting the ShoutOut by removing the close button.
