Examining Other Methods for Creating Segments

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to explore various methods to create and define a segment.

Additional Segmentation Methods

Besides using the steps in the previous module to create Segments, there are a few other methods you can use to create and define a Segment.

Save as a Segment

If you have created a rule and would like to save the specific rule conditions as a Segment for later use, this is possible by clicking on the Save as a Segment button in the bottom right of the Editor whenever you are creating conditions inside the Rule Engine:

The figure shows the button in the bottom right to Save this Start Point rule as a Segment.

The image shows a dialog box for creating rules with Save as Segment button highlighted.

Create a Segment Based on User Session Data

In order to create a Segment based on user session data, choose User Attributes > Session in the dropdowns of the Rule Engine when adding a rule to your Segment.

The figure shows a rule being added for a Segment called New Users. Here using the User Attributes > Session rule, we can create a rule to detect when a user was First Seen to determine if they are a new user.

The image shows a dialog box for creating a segmentation rule in which User Attributes and Session drop-downs are highlighted.

Note

If this option is not available, reach out to your WalkMe contact to have the Session option added to the User Attributes Rule Engine dropdown.

Create a Segment Based on a Variable

User Variables are the most widely used and versatile rule type when creating Segments. Depending on their configuration, variables can store information about a user’s role, access level, and even time within the organization.

Variable names and values must be configured within your environment and can then be read by WalkMe to segment items.

The figure shows a variable rule being added for a Segment called Manager. In this example, using the User Data > Variable rule, we have created a rule to detect whether or not a user is a manager.

The image shows a dialog box for creating a segmentation rule based on variable in which the Segment is Manager.

Create a Segment Based on IDP Integration

If you have previously set up IDP Integration, you can create a Segment using the imported attributes by navigating to User Attributes > IDP in the dropdowns of the Rule Engine when creating your segment.

Like variables, this information is integrated from your organization and can then be read by WalkMe to segment items.

The figure shows an IDP rule being added for a Segment. In this example, using the User Attributes > IDP rule, we have created a rule to detect which location a user coming from.

The image shows a dialog box for creating a segment rule in which an IDP rule being added for a Segment.

Summary

You just learned about some powerful ways to use Segmentation in order to show specific content to specific groups of users and in specific scenarios.

To recap, in this course you learned:

  • What Behavior Based Segments are.
  • How to use Behavior Based Segmentation to create and edit Segments in order to display the appropriate content to each group of your users.
  • How to create and edit Segments using User Sessions, Variables, & IDP in order to display the appropriate content to each group of your users.
