Acquiring Essential Tools for WalkMe

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to acquire and explore WalkMe Editor and Builder extension.

Introduction

Welcome to the WalkMe Builder I learning journey!

This learning journey covers all the foundational information a new WalkMe Builder should know. It is a good fit for brand new builders, as well as those seeking to become Certified.

Before we get started, let's go through the essential technical setup steps required to create WalkMe content.

Accessing the WalkMe Editor

The WalkMe Editor is an essential tool for creating and managing WalkMe content. However, please note that not all learners enrolled for this learning journey are eligible for a WalkMe Editor account, which is necessary to download and use the Editor.

Before proceeding, please review the information relevant to your role or organization to determine whether you should attempt to install the WalkMe Editor. If you are not eligible for an account, simply continue to the next lesson—there are still many valuable learning opportunities in this course.

To help you understand your eligibility for the WalkMe Editor access, review the guidance below that corresponds to your role or affiliation:

WalkMe Customers

You should have access.

WalkMe customers receive Editor access as part of your license agreement.

Editor accounts are provisioned by either:

  • Your WalkMe System Administrator, or
  • Your designated WalkMe Customer Success Manager (CSM)

To request access:

Contact your internal WalkMe admin team or your assigned CSM.

Once your Editor account has been provisioned, follow the installation instructions provided in this learning journey.

SAP Internal Employees

More information on access is coming soon.

Currently, WalkMe Editor accounts are not generally available to all SAP employees. Please consult your direct manager to determine if you require access as part of your role.

Partner Organisations

Access depends on partnership status.

If you are part of a partner organization, your eligibility for the WalkMe Editor will vary. Visit the PartnerEdge Portal for more information about WalkMe Editor eligibility and access.

Other Learners (e.g. students, general public)

No access available to the WalkMe Editor.

Although you may not receive an Editor account, this learning journey still offers valuable insights into the WalkMe Editor through demonstrations, use cases, and guided overviews. You are encouraged to continue with the next lesson to benefit from these learning resources.

Download the WalkMe Editor

WalkMe is an overlay that sits on top of your web platform. When a web page loads, WalkMe content then loads on top of it.

The WalkMe Editor

The Editor is a desktop application where you build and maintain your content.

Collaborative Space

If there are multiple people at your company that have access to the Editor, you all will be collaborating on content for your platform(s).

Systems

Each web platform has its own WalkMe Editor System. There can be multiple systems tied to your Editor.

For example, if your company has WalkMe licensed for two web platforms - let's say a reporting platform and a project management platform - your team would have:

  • One system for the reporting platform where all reporting content lives.

  • One system for the project management platform where all project management content lives.

Each Editor System is technically configured to work optimally on the relevant platform. This is done during your company's technical setup with WalkMe.

Download the Editor

Let's make sure you have the WalkMe Editor downloaded.

  1. Visitwalkme.com/download
  2. Click Download. You will select between the Windows or Mac versions.*Unless your are an IT team member tasked with the full company-wide technical deployment of WalkMe, do not select the MSI version.
  3. Run the installation file, and follow the instructions.
Here is what the WalkMe Editor download page will look like. You have the option to download for Windows or Mac.

Now that we have the Editor downloaded, let's learn more about the Builder Extension.

WalkMe Builder Extension

There are two types of Extensions related to WalkMe:

  1. The Builder Extension - required for anyone who is building content with the Editor.
  2. The User Extension - required for end users to see published content in situations where WalkMe is deployed to a company's employees via an extension.

This configuration is determined during the technical set up process for WalkMe on a platform. Let's dive into learning more about the Builder Extension.

The Builder Extension

The WalkMe Builder Extension is a browser extension. It allows the Editor to connect to your web browser so that you can build content. It's essential for anyone who will be creating WalkMe items.

With these two connected, you can select elements on the screen and more!

Follow the steps below to add the Builder Extension to your browser.

  1. Click the Settings icon located at the top right of your WalkMe Editor
  2. In the dropdown, select System settings
  3. Click User Preferences tab
  4. Choose your desired browser
  5. Click Add Extension
The User Preferences tab in the WalkMe Editor settings.

This is different from the User Extension, which is typically utilized if you have WalkMe on a platform for employees to interact with it. The end user extension loads WalkMe content for end users to see in a live, published environment. Alternatively, you may have a snippet deployment and not need an end user extension at all! These are both configured during the technical setup phase. This information is for context.

The image shows what the extensions will look like if you have both installed on your browser.

A Few Technical Details

  • We find that most of our Builders use a test or sandbox environment to first create their WalkMe content.
  • Once that content is created, they likely publish to a testing environment and then eventually publish to the live production environment for end users to interact with the items.
  • In your Editor, you will see references to these Test and Production environments. During technical setup of WalkMe for your platform, your company defines which environment is Test and which one is Production!

If you would like to further explore technical deployment details now, check out our WalkMe Deployment Overview (opens in a new tab).

Navigate WalkMe Editor

Now that we have the Editor and extension downloaded, let's get more comfortable with navigating the WalkMe Editor before we get to building.

Building Tip!

Most Builders find it helpful to snap their Editor and browser side-by-side when creating content. This allows us to see the Editor on the left and our entire web page on the right. Doing this significantly decreases clicks and back-and-forth, creating a smoother building experience!

In the top right-hand corner of the Editor, click the square icon to snap the Editor and web browser for a side-by-side view.
