Customizing Elements Behavior

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to adjust a Launcher's basic design elements.

Element's Behavior Settings

Let's dive into a few more technical details for our Launcher.

The Element's Behavior settings are applicable for both Launchers and SmartTips.

What is Element's Behavior?

The Element's Behavior settings help with issues where a WalkMe item is not showing up as expected on the page.

They help WalkMe better understand how a selected element behaves on the website to ensure your WalkMe content shows up when and where it's supposed to.

The figure shows Element's Behavior section in the Editor.

Why is this Important?

Remember that by default, WalkMe technically functions by trying to load content upon initial page load.

So if the element you attached your Launcher to is not visible immediately when the web page loads, we need to tell WalkMe to keep looking for the element after that page load to make sure our content will appear.

This is where Element's Behavior comes in.

Note

In this example, the Signature text element is not visible until the user clicks into the "Signature" tab. There is no page refresh.

There are three main ways that WalkMe describes how elements behave on a website.

Note

Some users might also see the "Automatic" option listed. WalkMe is building in functionality to automatically detect how an element behaves on the site to make things easier for Builders! But, it's still important to understand how WalkMe is working.

Appears on Page Load

This (or "Automatic") is the default option for Element Behavior, and most elements on the web page show up as soon as the page loads.

Example:

When you load up the page on your e-mail, the create new mail, click on inbox, and other folders are immediately visible – this means these elements appear on page load.

Appears After Page Load and then Stays Visible

This option is used for elements like buttons or forms that appear after you click on an element on the page.

Example:

This might happen with a form. When you click on a button, a form may appear for you to fill out. Once the form is on the page, there is no button to remove the form - it just stays on the page.

Appears and Disappears as a Result of User Action

This option means that if you interact with a button or page a certain way, a new element will appear. But if you interact with that same element, the new element will go away.

Example:

Dropdown menus are the most common example of this. When you click/hover on a menu, you may see a list of options, but the moment you move away from the menu, it will go away.

Display Condition

A Display Condition can be added to an individual WalkMe item and sets additional parameters for when this item should play for end users.

Display Conditions are relevant for Launchers, SmartTips, and Smart Walk-Thrus.

Why Would I Use This?

There may be times when the element we attach our Launchers to displays on multiple pages but you only want the Launcher to showup on one of those pages.

Or maybe you only want a Launcher to show up if a certain option is visible on the screen to make the content more relevant for users.

This is when Display Conditions can help.

Note

In this example, the Launcher only shows up when users select their subscription frequency as "1 Year."

Where can I add a Display Condition to my Deployable?

The Display Condition can be found in the settings of the individual item under the Display Condition tab. We will use the Condition Builder to set up these by clicking "Create a rule".

The figure shows location of Display Condition in the item settings. You can click Create a rule to add a condition under which you want the item to appear.

Summary

Launching Launchers
  • Launchers are buttons that can activate other WalkMe items such as Resources, Smart Walk-Thrus, or ShoutOuts.
  • Using Launchers directly where users might need help increases engagement with our content.
  • With out of the box tools, we can adjust the text, colors, and more.
