Introducing Flow Steps

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to describe the importance of Flow Steps in Smart Walk Thrus.

Overview

Smart Walk-Thru Flow Steps are the invisible guidance guardrails that users will encounter with when using a Smart Walk-Thru. We'll be showcasing some of the steps available for use in a Smart Walk-Thru. In future lessons, we'll discuss more advanced steps.

Watch the video to understand the basics of flow steps.

Key Takeaways

Smart Walk-Thru Flow Steps allow us to change the way that users go through a Smart Walk-Thru process. Flow Steps are an essential part of developing Smart Walk-Thrus that accommodate different situations and types of users.

Unlike regular Steps in a Smart Walk-Thru, which are visible and provide guidance to the end user on a website, Flow Steps are not visible to the end user. Rather, they allow us to control how the Smart Walk-Thru plays.

Regular steps appear as blue and Flow Steps appears as orange in the Smart Walk-Thru Map in the WalkMe Editor.

The Bells and Whistles of a Smart Walk-Thru

Which Steps are Flow Steps?

Flow Steps are the "bells and whistles" of a Smart Walk-Thru. They provide the logic to accommodate different situations and types of users. They will appear orange in a Smart Walk-Thrus and are not visible to the end user.

These Flow Steps include but are not limited to:

  • Splits
  • Wait For Conditions
  • Auto-Steps

The figure shows Split Steps and Wait For Condition Flow Steps in a Smart Walk-Thru.

The image shows a flowchart showing steps to search an account: Check for account tab, click + button if available, and select tab to add.

Note

There are many other Flow Steps, but we'll primarily be covering the ones listed above. You'll learn more about the others in future courses and lessons.

The Importance of Flow Steps

Flow Steps can enhance the user experience by improving the flow of the Smart Walk-Thrus.

For example, let's say we recommend to the user that they should order two treats for their pet. How can we customize our Smart Walk-Thru experience for the user if they don't have two treats in their shopping cart?

This is where a Flow Steps like Splits becomes handy! We can provide the logic to check if a user has two treats in their cart and, if they do, we can play specialized guidance steps.

Watch the video to know more. Note that the video doesn't support audio.

Note

It is recommended for the user to have two treats in their shopping cart, thus prompting the yes branch of the Split Step.

Now that we're more familiar with Flow Steps and their importance in Smart Walk-Thrus, let's look at our first Flow Steps: Splits
