Introducing SmartTips

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to provide an overview of SmartTips.

Introduction

SmartTips provide on-screen guidance to your end users as they navigate your website or application.

They are a core component of any WalkMe build and can help to improve user experience, ensure data quality, and therefore reduce user frustration.

Let's start with an overview of SmartTips and what you can expect to learn in this lesson.

Watch the video for an introduction to SmartTips.

Key Takeaways

SmartTips are tooltips that provide additional information to end users when they need it.

They come in two primary formats:

  • Guidance SmartTips: These draw users attention to parts of a site where we want to communicate extra information.
  • Validation SmartTips: These will verify if the user has correctly entered data in a field.

SmartTips can be configured to display when a user hovers over a specific element on a page or as an icon beside the area we wish to draw attention to.

As we learned from the video, SmartTips are customizable tooltips that provide help to users directly at their moment of need.

SmartTips give on-screen guidance that present users with additional information about specific items on the page, or they can provide real-time validation when users interact with data fields.

They are especially useful when addressing areas of a site or app where users often make mistakes or have questions, such as online forms or processes.

There is an example of the two primary formats: Guidance and Validation.

The image shows a Guidance SmartTip Example.

In this example, a Guidance SmartTip is being used to offer additional delivery information to customers when they hover over the icon next to Delivery.

In this example, Validation SmartTips ensure that users enter information in a required field.

When the user forgets to enter a last name, validation rules trigger the SmartTip.

When they then correct their error another SmartTip plays to confirm this.

Note

While the main SmartTip formats are Guidance and Validation, WalkMe also offers AI SmartTips. These are an add on that can be purchased as a standalone feature or as part of WalkMe(x).

Why Would I Use SmartTips?

SmartTips can be used to address a wide range of use cases. Expand the boxes below to read about some of the ways in which Guidance and Validation SmartTips can help overcome common pain points.

My customers miss important information!

Customers using an online support form to raise issues with their orders always fail to include their order number when reaching out for support. This delays response time and leads to customer frustration.

We can use a Guidance SmartTip with an icon to draw users attention to this crucial information as they're completing the online support form.

Users often dont understand new features of my platform!

If our platform or webpage has a number of features that aren't instantly understood by users, then we can use Guidance SmartTips to offer more information in a subtle way.

In the example, users updating their Team Account may be confused by the different permissions options, so we've used SmartTips to clarify what these mean.

My Customers struggle with providing the right information!

When processing online orders it is essential to have the right customer information in order to communicate updates.

In this example we can use Validation SmartTips to ensure contact numbers are entered in the correct format for US customers.

I need to make fields mandatory in my CRM platform!

When completing a Signature Request form in our CRM we do not have native capability to validate that a field has accurate data entry before the form is submitted.

In this example it is crucial that our employees include a message to recipients. By usingValidation SmartTips we can ensure that users cannot submit until the "Message to Recipients" field is complete.

Now that we have had an introduction to SmartTips and understand what they are, we'll look at how to create them in the next lesson.
