Preparing to Publish Content

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to choose WalkMe Environment to preview content.

Overview of WalkMe Environments

Publishing makes the WalkMe items we create available to an end user, as long as we have the associated Snippet running in their browser. Whether it's to test out our implementation in a Test Environment or release it to our users in a Published Environment, we'll need to understand how to properly configure and Publish our WalkMe items.

Watch the video to explore the importance of Environments.

Key Takeaways

Environments are basically different versions of a website where development teams can explore, iterate, and maintain new features and functions before launching to the main platform.

At WalkMe, we primarily utilize two environments:

  • Test: Primarily used to testing and exploring features and functionalities before launching to end users.
  • Production: Primarily used to showcase and launch new features and functionalities to live end users.

The Importance of Environments

Publishing allows you to select, organize, test, and publish items that you create in the WalkMe Editor to your different Environments. Publishing is an important part of the building process; however, knowing the Environments we're Publishing to, is just as important.

Publishing to the Right Environment

Whether it's to test out our implementation on a Test Environment or release it to our users in the Production Environment, we'll need to understand the purpose of each Environment.

  • Test: Primarily used to testing and exploring features and functionalities before launching to end users.
  • Production: Primarily used to showcase and launch new features and functionalities to live end users.

The figure shows an example of publishing to Production Environment.

Choosing the Right Environment View

The WalkMe Editor’s content list view shows all the content that was created for the desired System. It is common to have WalkMe items that have different Publish Statuses in each Environment. For example, an item may be Published in the Test Environment, while still being in Draft mode in the Production Environment.

Switching Environment Views

We can view the Publish Status of each item in each Environment by switching the Environment in the top right of the WalkMe Editor.

The figure shows how to switch the Production Environment.

Great job! Now that we're more familiar with the different WalkMe Environments, let's look at Previewing WalkMe content.

Preview WalkMe Content

Watch the video to understand Previewing WalkMe Environments.

Key Takeaways

Previewing allows us to view WalkMe content from the perspective of a end user. There are multiple Preview options allow us to view WalkMe content quickly. No need to preview our entire Editor all at once, we can choose from several options to view only what is needed at the moment.

There several options available to Preview WalkMe content:

  • Selective Preview
  • Quick Preview
  • Full Preview

How to Preview

Before Publishing, we have the option to Preview our work while using the WalkMe Editor. Preview Mode allows us to view how our implementation will work on the site, without having to Publish first or install the Snippet on the site.

Simply check the boxes for all the items we'd like to Preview, then click Preview.

You can Preview multiple items at the same time to see how all of your content works together.

Types of Previewing

Selective Preview

Select individual items that you want to Preview. As we begin to select each item, the screen will change and once we're ready, we can select Preview.

Quick Preview

This is the default option that will Preview all WalkMe items in only the default language, which tends to be English.

This mode is recommended to view all our WalkMe content at-a-glance.

Full Preview (Multi-language Preview)

Full Preview lets us Preview all items with additional languages and the current saved settings. This mode is recommended when there are multiple languages to test from an end user's perspective.

Note

Items linked to other WalkMe items won't work if they're not Previewed together. For example: having a Launcher that opens the Player Menu won't open if the Launcher is Previewed by itself.

Now that we've covered Previewing and the different modes available to us, we can talk about Publishing!
