Creating Exercise Catalog

Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:
  • Manage individual preferences for distance and weight in profile to use units you are familiar with
  • Create training exercises with detailed instructions for the coaching team
  • Create athletic exercises for the micro planning process with detailed instructions
  • Create sketches to illustrate exercises and exercise variations
  • Explain how to use analytics to show how often a player practiced a specific skill

Preference Management in Profile

Depending on the location of your club, you might use different numerical units in your daily life. These are the units you work with and are most familiar with. Common examples for this are weight and distance units. In SAP Sports One, to give you the flexibility you need, you can maintain personal preferences for the weight and distance units.

To manage your personal preferences, navigate to your profile by clicking on your profile picture in the upper right corner and select My Profile. Once in your profile, you can edit and manage your preferences for the unit of measure on the My Preferences tab.

These preferences are later used in the creation of, among other things, athletics exercises to document a player's expected weight for an athletic exercise.

Creation of Training Exercises

Now that we have managed the personal preferences for the weight and distance unit in SAP Sports One, the next step is to create the exercise catalog with the training exercises needed for training management. These training exercises are an important part at the start of the season and, therefore, this unit.

In SAP Sports One, a distinction is made in training planning between training exercises at team level and athletics exercises that focus more on the individual training of a player. For this reason, the subdivision and structural organization of the exercise catalog into the different exercise categories and areas is advisable.

Note

The creation of the folder structure as well as the suggestion of best practices for the structure of the exercise categories is described in the Considering Basics for Training Management unit.

When creating the training exercises, many initial configurations, such as the tags from the tag-boards and the skills, reappear for use. In order for a exercise to be fully documented in SAP Sports One, we recommend going through the initial system configuration in the Considering Basics for Training Management unit, if you have not already done so.

This lesson is about creating and managing the training exercises. These exercises are particularly relevant for standard team training.

Note

To be able to create and manage training exercises, you need the role of administrator or coach and the corresponding permission on "Exercise Catalog" at "Training". An overview of all SAP Sports One user roles is available on the SAP Help Portal (User Roles | SAP Help Portal).

The following simulation guides you through the process of creating exercises in the exercise catalog.

Creation of Athletic Exercises

As already mentioned, SAP Sports One differentiates between training exercises and athletic exercises. Athletic exercises are exercises that are aimed at training specific athletic aspects of a player. This type of exercise is used in particular for individual training, because the performance levels of the players differ significantly, especially in the athletic area. Possible examples of athletic exercises in the catalog could be strength exercises such as bench pressing or squatting.

The creation of athletic exercises is the same as the creation of training exercises, with one exception: for athletic exercises, descriptions, variations, hints, and other information such as intensity and trained skills can also be documented.

A distinction between the exercise types is made by selecting Athletic Exercise. As soon as this checkbox is active, the training exercise changes to an athletic exercise. At the same, time two further parameters were added to the exercise with Suggested Repetitions and Suggested Weight.

The suggested repetitions parameter can be used to define how many repetitions should be performed for an athletic exercise per iteration or set.

The suggested weight parameter can be used to define a weight that should be used to perform the exercise. Alternatively, you can specify a percentage value of the player's one repetition max (1RM) with which the repetitions should be carried out.

The 1RM can also be added for each player individually in the player profile later as part of the micro planning unit for training management.

Creation of Sketches and Sketch Tool

In SAP Sports One, you can create sketches for training exercises and athletic exercises. These sketches should help you to describe the training exercise and the associated sequences on the pitch in the best possible way. In addition, the creation of sketches offers the possibility of depicting variations of the training exercises. This allows you to differentiate between exercise variations depending on the training focus for the current training season.

These sketches are created in the SAP Sports One sketch tool. In the sketch tool, objects and players can be visualized directly on the playing field. In addition, running paths, passing paths, shots, and areas can be marked in order to better illustrate the sequences of the exercise. With the help of these sketches, the descriptions, variations, and coaching hints are expanded in the best possible way.

If you have the required permissions for the exercise catalog, you can create a sketch in SAP Sports One at Sketch when navigating to an exercise.

After creating the sketch, you can also save it and upload it as an attachment. Using the attachments, you can create more than one sketch to depict the variations of the training exercise.

Overview of Training Units with Analytics

Similar to the way extensive analyses are already possible for the player's trained skills, insights and data can also be determined for the players' participation in the individual training units. At this point of the analysis phase, it is, for example, possible to show how many minutes a player has participated in a training unit that is assigned to a specific training exercise category.

The figure below shows an analysis of how many minutes a certain exercise category was trained by a player over a certain period of time. The best practice exercise categories from the Considering Basics for Training Management unit, such as warm-up, technique, tactics, and athletics, were used as the underlying categories for this example.

In addition to analyzing the training frequency of specific exercise categories, individual exercises within these categories can also be analyzed. A drilldown can be used for this, which makes it possible to drill down into the exercises of a exercise category that was trained as part of the training units of a training session. This possibility in the analysis can be offered due to the fact that we have carried out and enabled a hierarchical structuring of the exercise categories in the initial exercise management in the Considering Basics for Training Management unit.

The figure below shows an analysis of how many minutes a certain exercise was trained by a player over a certain period of time.
