Introducing Communication and Validation

Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:
  • Explain the importance of communication with players over the season in reaching season targets
  • Illustrate the importance of validating the season targets of players in fulfilling visions

Communication as a Key Component

The importance of communication for achieving targets cannot be overemphasized. Effective and smooth communication is the foundation for successful cooperation in all areas of training management. Clear communication between club officials, the coaching team, and the players has many advantages throughout the season. Good communication not only helps ensure seasonal targets are achieved and the overarching visions are realized, it can also lead to the following additional benefits.

Firstly, good communication enables a clear understanding of the goals and tasks. By communicating information, expectations, and requirements clearly and precisely, everyone involved knows exactly what is expected of them. A common understanding reduces misunderstandings and miscommunication that could lead to delays or mistakes. If, for example, it is clearly communicated with the players what is expected of them in the season, they can focus on exactly that and be measured against it.

Secondly, effective communication promotes cooperation within the club and the team. When people communicate openly and respectfully with each other, a positive working atmosphere is created. This leads to a better team spirit, increased motivation, and a sense of belonging. Collaboration is crucial to achieve players' season targets and the fulfillment of the overarching visions.

Finally, precise communication also promotes innovation. Open exchange of ideas and opinions can lead to new and creative approaches that contribute to the achievement of targets. Through a transparent communication culture, people feel encouraged to explore new ways and improve existing processes. An example of this would be the adaptation of training depending on training intensity and load management of individual players.

To summarize, communication is a key component for success in training management. Without clear and effective communication, targets could be difficult to achieve, while with it, the potential for success and growth is greatly enhanced.

For this reason, communication is also an important component for SAP Sports One, which is described in more detail in this unit.

Validation of Targets at Season End

It was already highlighted in the Agreeing on Targets at Season Start unit how important it is for a professional football club to set clear and well-defined targets for the players at the beginning of a season. It is particularly important that the player understands what the club's vision is and what path they should take together with the club. Once they have internalized the philosophy and the individual targets, many opportunities and development potentials can arise over the season.

At the end of the season, these predefined targets will be reviewed again. This creates a framework for the entire season by first defining the targets and then validating them. At this point, the question is answered to what extent the player has achieved their targets and in which area the player has failed to achieve their individual seasonal agreement. In connection with this, the possible strengths and weaknesses of the player are revealed.

However, validating targets is not only important for the past season, but also provides opportunities for improvement in the future. When individuals receive constructive feedback, they can use that feedback to expand their skills and knowledge. A thorough validation thereby lays the foundation for continuous improvement and self-development. The validation of the targets at the end of a season also represents the beginning of the target agreement at the start of the new season.

Note

In the Agreeing on Targets at Season Start unit, the TIPS rating scale was introduced for the evaluation and the target agreement of a player. If you are not yet familiar with this, please have a look at this.

The TIPS rating scale is used in this unit again as an example of analysis to validate a player's targets. A consideration of this analysis follows at the end of the unit to provide a framework for overall training management.
